Patrick Vieira defends Senegal veterans after journalist questions Gueye and Koulibaly
Senegal head coach Patrick Vieira strongly defended Idrissa Gueye and Kalidou Koulibaly after being challenged over the continued involvement of the two experienced players following the Lions of Teranga’s 1-0 friendly victory over Comoros in Marseille.
Vieira reacted angrily to a journalist’s description of Gueye and Koulibaly as “players whose time has passed”, insisting the pair remain important figures for Senegal and have earned their places through years of performances at the highest level.
The former France international made his position clear during the post-match press conference, calling the description disrespectful and asking the journalist to reframe the question.
Vieira rejects criticism of Senegal veterans
“This is an inappropriate act. It should not be repeated based on what is being said outside. You are talking about players who have scored goals and are making history for Senegal.”
Vieira added: “We cannot use these terms. Even if some people use them off the field, you journalists are obligated to change this term. We watched the game they played today, and you consider them forgotten players. It is unacceptable to use these terms. This question and this lack of respect, I do not accept them. They are exemplary players, on and off the field.”
The Senegal coach then told the journalist to “reframe the question” before explaining why he continues to value the two players.
“I am not at war, I am just pointing out something unacceptable. We are talking about two players who have been playing at the highest level for years. Their presence here is proof that they have the necessary qualifications to represent Senegal.”
Senegal maintain unbeaten start under Vieira
Senegal secured a second successive victory under Vieira thanks to a goal from Eliamin Ndiaye on his former home ground.
The result extended Vieira’s unbeaten start as Senegal coach, although the performance was not entirely convincing against a Comoros side that made life difficult for the African champions.
The victory follows Senegal’s recent 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying results, with the Lions of Teranga having drawn with Mozambique before beating Ethiopia.
