Patrick Mevoungou names top five African football teams

In an exclusive interview with Foot Africa, former Cameroon international Patrick Mevoungou has revealed his selection of the five best African national football teams currently.

The ex-defensive midfielder named Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Cameroon as the standout teams on the continent.

“I believe that Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Cameroon are the best in Africa at the moment,” Mevoungou stated.

His choices have raised some eyebrows, particularly given the omission of Senegal, the reigning African champions, as well as Algeria, who have seen a resurgence under their new coach, Vladimir Petkovic.

Mevoungou’s selections highlight a mix of teams with strong recent performances and consistent presence in international competitions.

Mevoungou, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career, was known for his tactical awareness and solid defensive play.

He represented the “Indomitable Lions” in two international matches, against Georgia and Albania.

After retiring in 2021, following a final stint at Colombe Sport, Mevoungou’s professional journey also took him through several European and Asian clubs, including Austria’s Sturm Graz.

While Mevoungou’s rankings exclude some of Africa’s more successful teams, his picks reflect his personal insights into the current strength of African football.

His selections are likely to stir debate among fans and pundits alike, especially given the strong performances of teams like Senegal and Algeria in recent years.

As Mevoungou continues to follow the evolution of African football, his opinions offer a valuable perspective on the continent’s top national teams and the ever-changing landscape of international football in Africa.
