Patrick Maswanganyi leaves Orlando Pirates after trophy-laden three-year spell

Patrick Maswanganyi has completed a move from Orlando Pirates to Bahrain Premier League side Alkhaldiya Sports Club after three seasons in which he won seven major domestic trophies and established himself as one of South African football’s most distinctive entertainers.

The 28-year-old midfielder, widely known as Tito, made 120 appearances for the Buccaneers, scoring 28 goals and creating 21 more. Orlando Pirates confirmed his departure on Monday, calling him a fan favourite who gave the club’s supporters “countless moments to celebrate”.

Maswanganyi joined Orlando Pirates from SuperSport United in 2023, arriving with an obvious talent for creative and individual play but with questions over whether his style would succeed at one of the country’s biggest clubs. He answered those doubts during his first campaign.

He quickly became an important attacking figure and helped Orlando Pirates win both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup. According to the club’s career record, he scored 10 goals in all competitions that season before collecting three individual honours at the 2023/24 PSL Awards.

Maswanganyi was named DStv Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, DStv Premiership Midfielder of the Season and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament. The Players’ Player award was particularly significant, reflecting the judgement of his fellow professionals and confirming his status as one of the league’s leading performers.

His contribution to the Nedbank Cup was especially memorable. Maswanganyi scored twice in the quarter-final against AmaZulu as Orlando Pirates recovered from conceding first to win 4-2 and reach the semi-finals.

He also played a key role in the final against Mamelodi Sundowns at Mbombela Stadium. With the match finely balanced, Orlando Pirates were awarded a penalty and Maswanganyi took responsibility. He sent Ronwen Williams the wrong way to level the score at 1-1, before Relebohile Mofokeng scored the late winner.

Although his penalty was not the decisive goal, it demonstrated his composure under pressure and his willingness to take on responsibility in an important match.

A defining Soweto Derby moment

Maswanganyi produced another standout moment in the Soweto Derby on 1 February 2025.

Orlando Pirates appeared set for a goalless draw with Kaizer Chiefs until they were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time. Maswanganyi stepped up and used a Panenka, delicately chipping the ball down the middle and leaving the goalkeeper unable to intervene.

The PSL described the effort as an “ice-cold” penalty. It was a fitting illustration of Maswanganyi’s character as a player who was prepared to take risks and express himself, even in high-pressure situations.

His time at Orlando Pirates was not without challenging spells. He was criticised, left out of the team at times and occasionally struggled to maintain the consistency expected of a player with his ability. However, he repeatedly showed an ability to produce decisive moments whenever an opportunity arose.

During his final full season, the 2025/26 campaign, Maswanganyi contributed 10 goals and four assists in 34 appearances. He started 20 of those matches but remained an important contributor as Orlando Pirates completed a historic season by winning the Betway Premiership title.

He leaves the club as a league champion, with his domestic honours also including three MTN8 medals, two Nedbank Cup medals and the Carling Black Label Cup.

Maswanganyi now begins a new chapter in Bahrain, leaving behind a spell marked not only by statistics and trophies but also by his flair, imagination and capacity to create memorable moments for Orlando Pirates supporters.
