Patrick Maswanganyi bids emotional farewell to Orlando Pirates

Patrick ‘Tito’ Maswanganyi has said an emotional goodbye to Orlando Pirates after completing his move to Bahrain Premier League side Al Khaldiya Sports Club, bringing his three-year stay with the Buccaneers to an end.

The 28-year-old attacking midfielder leaves the Soweto giants as one of the club’s most popular figures after playing an important role in their recent success.

Maswanganyi’s departure comes despite Pirates confirming that he remained part of new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s plans for the upcoming season. The player, however, expressed his desire to continue his career abroad, prompting the club to respect his decision.

“Following discussions with the player and his representatives, he expressed a clear desire to pursue a new opportunity abroad,” Pirates said.

With the club choosing not to stand in his way, Maswanganyi’s spell in the famous black and white jersey has officially come to an end.

The midfielder has now reflected on his time at Pirates with an emotional farewell message, expressing his gratitude to the club for giving him the opportunity to represent one of South Africa’s most historic football institutions.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Orlando Pirates Football Club for the opportunity to represent this historic institution,” he said on Instagram.

“Wearing the black and white jersey has been a privilege and a responsibility that I have never taken for granted.”

‘The songs, the chants, the nicknames’

Maswanganyi also reserved special praise for his teammates, coaches, technical staff and the wider club personnel who contributed to his development during his time in Soweto.

The former SuperSport United player said his three years at Pirates gave him experiences and lessons that would remain important throughout the next stage of his career.

He also made a point of acknowledging the supporters, whose backing became a defining part of his relationship with the club.

“Thank you for your unwavering support throughout my time at the club,” Maswanganyi said.

“The songs, the chants, the nicknames, the messages and the energy you brought to every match will always be special to me.”

The midfielder said the support of the Pirates faithful continually inspired him to wear the badge with pride whenever he took to the pitch.

‘I leave Orlando Pirates with immense respect’

Maswanganyi now turns his attention to a new challenge in Bahrain, where he will continue his career with Al Khaldiya following his decision to leave South Africa.

Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, his farewell message underlined the affection he has developed for Pirates and the people associated with the club.

“I leave Orlando Pirates with immense respect and appreciation for the club, its people and its supporters,” he said.

Maswanganyi departs Pirates with the memories of his three-year journey intact, while beginning a new chapter in Bahrain after choosing to pursue an opportunity outside South Africa.
