Patrick Dorgu’s challenging first half took a turn for the worse when he was sent off just before the break in his side’s clash with Ipswich.
The 20-year-old Danish-Nigerian defender’s day began poorly when a miscommunication with goalkeeper Andre Onana led to Ipswich’s opening goal. But things escalated further moments later, as Dorgu was penalized for a dangerous studs-up tackle on Omari Hutchinson.
The referee missed the initial foul, but VAR intervened, prompting an on-field review. After a closer look, the decision was made to send Dorgu off for the serious foul play, leaving his team down to 10 men in the wet conditions at Old Trafford.
The Premier League issued a statement, saying, “VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible red card to Dorgu for the challenge on Hutchinson – with the contact deemed serious foul play. Upon review, the referee issued a red card to Dorgu.”
It was a difficult moment for the young defender, who will surely look to bounce back from this setback in future matches.
