Patrice Motsepe is set to remain at the helm of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as the sole candidate for re-election in 2025. The South African businessman, who has served as president since 2021, is widely expected to secure another term without opposition.
Motsepe, also the owner of South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, initially ascended to the CAF presidency three years ago in Addis Ababa without facing any challengers.
With no serious contenders emerging this time, it appears his path to a renewed mandate will be similarly smooth.
Former Egyptian Football Federation president Hany Abo Rida, frequently mentioned as a possible rival for the position, has decided against running.
Abo Rida, who is currently a member of both the CAF Executive Committee and FIFA Council, had once expressed interest in challenging for the CAF presidency in 2021.
However, recent reports confirm that he has shifted his focus back to domestic affairs, opting instead to aim for a return to the leadership of the Egyptian Football Federation.
Abo Rida’s withdrawal leaves the stage clear for Motsepe, who officially confirmed his candidacy for the 2025 elections several weeks ago.
At the 46th Ordinary Assembly of CAF, held in Addis Ababa on October 22, 2024, the Executive Committee voted to remove the age limit of 70 years for candidates seeking elective positions within the organisation.
This amendment opens the door for individuals over 70 to run for key roles, including the presidency and other positions within the Executive Committee.
The change could have paved the way for 71-year-old Abo Rida to stand for election, had he chosen to do so.
However, his decision to focus on re-assuming control of the Egyptian Federation means the new rule will not impact the upcoming CAF election.
With the race for CAF presidency effectively settled, Motsepe appears poised for a second term.
His tenure has been marked by efforts to modernise the organisation and improve the development of African football, though the upcoming election cycle will provide further opportunities to solidify his legacy.
As the sole candidate, Motsepe is likely to continue his leadership of CAF as the Confederation faces new challenges and opportunities in African football.
