Paris Saint-Germain forward Ibrahim Mbaye has committed his international future to Senegal, scoring and providing two assists on his first start for the Lions of Teranga in an 8-0 friendly victory over Kenya, just six months before the 2026 World Cup.

The 17-year-old winger chose to represent his father’s country of birth despite having previously played for France at under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-20 levels, and facing competition from Morocco for his services.

Speaking to AfricaSoccer.com about joining the Senegal squad, Mbaye said: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience you can’t forget. It’s a huge pleasure to be with the veterans like Kalidou (Koulibaly), Sadio (Mané), Gana (Gueye), it’s a childhood dream. I was very well integrated by everyone.”

Impressive debut performance

Mbaye made an immediate impact in his first start for Senegal on Tuesday, contributing directly to three goals in the comprehensive victory over Kenya. The teenager provided two assists, including what was described as a superb one-touch pass to Sadio Mané for Senegal’s third goal, before scoring himself to complete his performance.

The debut represented a stark contrast to his club form, where the dynamic winger has yet to score in 13 appearances for PSG this season. Despite the lack of goals at club level, his performances have been sufficient to earn the trust of PSG manager Luis Enrique, who selected him to start against Barcelona in the Champions League last October.

Mbaye’s club performances, though occasionally raw for the highest level according to observers, clearly caught the attention of Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, who moved quickly to secure the teenager’s commitment to the Lions of Teranga.

Recruitment process and decision

Thiaw personally met with Mbaye’s parents and successfully convinced the youngster to commit to Senegal despite interest from both Morocco and France. The teenager’s previous experience representing France at youth level made the decision particularly significant.

According to reports, family members and friends had urged Mbaye to take more time before committing to a national team. However, the teenager decided to follow his heart and accept Senegal’s call-up for the November international window.

The opportunity to represent Senegal at both the Africa Cup of Nations and the upcoming 2026 World Cup is believed to have influenced his decision. The timing of his commitment, arriving just six months before the World Cup, positions him to potentially feature in the tournament should his form continue.

November international window

Mbaye joined the Senegal squad for two friendly fixtures during the November international break. His first involvement came against Brazil on Saturday 15 November, before his impressive full debut performance against Kenya three days later.

The teenager joins a squad featuring established international stars including defender Kalidou Koulibaly, forward Sadio Mané, and midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye, whom he referenced in his initial comments about the honour of representing Senegal.

Senegal, who won their second Africa Cup of Nations title in January 2026 by defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final, are preparing for the World Cup with these friendly fixtures designed to integrate new players and maintain competitive sharpness.

Club career and development

At PSG, Mbaye has featured regularly this season despite his young age, making 13 appearances for the French champions. His selection for high-profile fixtures, including the Champions League match against Barcelona, demonstrates the confidence manager Luis Enrique has placed in his abilities.

Whilst observers note that the teenager occasionally displays rawness in his performances at elite club level, his pace, directness and technical ability have marked him as a significant prospect for both club and country.

His swift impact at international level, opening his goalscoring account in just his second appearance and first start for Senegal, suggests he may adapt more naturally to the international game despite his relative inexperience.

Mbaye’s commitment to Senegal represents a significant coup for the West African nation, securing a highly-rated young talent who had options to represent three different countries. His immediate impact on debut will strengthen confidence that he can contribute meaningfully to Senegal’s World Cup campaign in six months’ time.
