Pape Thiaw optimistic ahead of Senegal’s World Cup campaign
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has expressed confidence ahead of the upcoming World Cup, while outlining how the national team plans to manage player fitness and preparations before the tournament begins.
After the announcement of the squad list for the competition, the Lions coach discussed the physical condition of several players and the challenges created by a demanding European season.
Many members of the Senegal national football team squad are still involved in club competitions across Europe, with some continuing to compete in domestic leagues and continental tournaments.
Speaking about the team’s preparation plans, Thiaw explained that the initial phase of preseason training would begin in Senegal, particularly for players based in France.
“To prepare, we’ll start here in Senegal for the French Ligue 1 players, because we know that our players have spent a lot of money with their clubs this year. There are those in England who haven’t finished their season, others are playing to win the Champions League, and still others in the Conference League. It’s been difficult.
We saw everything that happened this year with the Africa Cup of Nations. Some players are still recovering or haven’t completely finished their season. I think they’ll need a few days of rest. We’ll manage that, but preseason training starts here in Senegal,” he explained.
The Senegal coach stressed the importance of balancing recovery and preparation as players return from long and physically demanding club campaigns.
Several key members of the squad are still involved in important fixtures with their clubs, leaving the coaching staff with the task of carefully managing workloads before the World Cup.
Thiaw also shared his hopes for Senegal’s chances at the tournament and suggested the team could finally enjoy success after previous attempts on the global stage.
“I hope the ‘third time’ rule will apply to this World Cup. Let’s hope this World Cup will be here in Senegal,” he added.
The comments reflected growing optimism within the Senegal camp as preparations continue for the competition. The Lions are expected to rely heavily on the experience of players competing at the highest level in Europe as they aim to make a strong impact at the tournament.
For Thiaw, the focus now remains on ensuring the squad arrives in the best possible condition physically and mentally ahead of the World Cup campaign.
