Tottenham Hotspur endured a turbulent quarter-final clash in the League Cup on Thursday, December 19, ultimately securing a dramatic 4-3 victory over Manchester United to advance to the semi-finals.
Despite a commanding 3-0 lead, Spurs were given a fright after two costly mistakes by goalkeeper Fraser Forster allowed United to mount a comeback.
However, a stunning strike from Heung-min Son sealed the win for Tottenham, keeping their hopes alive of ending their long trophy drought.
The match, played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, unfolded in a fashion that epitomised the unpredictability of Spurs’ season.
Pape Matar Sarr and his teammates looked to have put the game to bed after a brace from Dominic Solanke (15th, 54th) and a goal from Dejan Kulusevski, who capitalised on a poor clearance by United’s Lisandro Martinez (46th).
With the score at 3-0, it appeared that Spurs were cruising to a comfortable victory.
However, the game took a dramatic turn after two blunders from Forster, who has been filling in for the injured Guglielmo Vicario.
The first error came in the 63rd minute, when Forster almost allowed Bruno Fernandes a clear shot on goal after a weak clearance.

Things worsened for the veteran goalkeeper just moments later when Amad Diallo, with plenty of time to compose himself, capitalised on another mistake, scoring United’s first goal in the 70th minute.
Diallo’s goal set the stage for a nervy final 20 minutes.
With Manchester United gaining momentum, Tottenham’s lead was under serious threat.
Yet, despite the pressure, Spurs held their nerve, and in the dying moments of the game, Son produced a sublime finish to restore Tottenham’s two-goal advantage, ensuring they secured the win.
The victory was bittersweet for Tottenham, who will need to address Forster’s erratic performance if they are to have a realistic shot at the League Cup title.
As they head into the semi-finals, Spurs will face stiff competition, with Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle United also remaining in the hunt for the trophy.
For now, though, Tottenham can celebrate their place in the next round, with Pape Matar Sarr and his teammates dreaming of a potential first major trophy in years.
The semi-final draw promises to be an exciting one, with Spurs hoping for a much smoother path to the final.
