Pape Gueye targets African Player of the Year crown after trophy-laden season

Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye has set his sights on winning the African Player of the Year award, with the Senegal international determined to build on an impressive year for club and country.

The 27-year-old believes the prestigious individual honour would recognise the consistency and hard work required to perform at the highest level throughout a season.

“The African Ballon d’Or was one of my objectives. It is an award that recognises the hard work of a season, and I am doing everything I can to improve every day so that I can reach that level of excellence with my club and my national team,” Gueye said.

His ambition comes after a series of standout performances for Villarreal and Senegal, strengthening his credentials for one of African football’s most coveted individual prizes.

La Liga recognition strengthens Gueye’s case

Gueye has enjoyed a productive spell in Spanish football, establishing himself as an influential presence in Villarreal’s midfield.

His performances were instrumental in helping the Spanish club secure third place in La Liga and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

The Senegalese midfielder’s influence also earned him the league’s African Most Valuable Player award, with 38 per cent of the vote, ahead of several prominent players, including Athletic Bilbao’s Iñaki Williams.

His ability to combine defensive discipline with attacking contributions has made him an important figure for Villarreal, while his growing influence has attracted support from within the club.

Villarreal teammate Nicolas Pépé has backed Gueye’s credentials for the African Player of the Year award, adding to the growing recognition of the midfielder’s performances.

Gueye has also maintained his goalscoring threat from midfield, finding the net three times in his first 10 appearances of the current domestic campaign.

AFCON heroics put Senegal star in spotlight

Gueye’s achievements with Villarreal have been complemented by his contributions to the Senegal national team.

He played a decisive role in Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph, scoring the only goal in the final against Morocco to secure the continental title, which has since been taken away from them over a walk off. The case is now at CAS.

His performance in the showpiece earned him the Man of the Match award, while his overall displays throughout the tournament secured him a place in the Team of the Tournament.

The midfielder subsequently carried his form into the FIFA World Cup, scoring twice in Senegal’s group-stage victory over Iraq.

However, Senegal’s campaign ended in the round of 32 following a defeat to Belgium, bringing an end to their hopes of progressing further in the competition.

Despite the disappointment, Gueye’s contributions on the international stage have further strengthened his individual ambitions as he seeks to add African Player of the Year recognition to his achievements.

Red card and international uncertainty present challenges

Gueye’s progress has not been without setbacks. The midfielder was sent off during Villarreal’s derby victory over Valencia after an elbow on José Gayà.

The dismissal resulted in a domestic suspension, ruling him out of the club’s subsequent league fixture against Espanyol.

His international future also faced uncertainty following a disagreement over his substitution during Senegal’s World Cup defeat to Belgium, after which he announced a temporary break from the national team.

However, the situation has since been resolved, with Gueye returning to the Senegal squad following the appointment of Patrick Vieira as head coach.

The midfielder has expressed optimism about his future with the national team and the prospect of developing further under Vieira’s guidance.

With his performances in Spain and his contributions to Senegal’s continental success, Gueye will hope to sustain his form and strengthen his bid for the African Player of the Year award.
