When asked about Marseille’s recent struggles on the field despite promising starts to the season, the Franco-Senegalese figure emphasized the need for self-reflection within the Provencal club. While he didn’t propose specific solutions, the former president of OM stressed the importance of changing mentalities to inject enthusiasm back into the club.
“What’s glaring when you observe the club, evident even in the stadium, is the lack of passion. This club is suffering from a lack of passion, and it’s not solely the players’ responsibility, as often claimed. There needs to be a collective soul-searching. A successful club begins from the president down to the groundsman. Let’s halt the comparisons of OM to German clubs; let’s cease references to Dortmund or Arsenal. We must reclaim the Marseille identity, infuse OM with a true Marseillais mentality. Let’s shed the pretensions of being the ‘Dortmund of the South’ and instead rejuvenate OM with the spirit of Marseille. We’re in Marseille; we must strive to be OM,” Pape Diouf articulated in La Provence.
