Panathinaikos bring Morocco midfielder Azzedine Ounahi back in €14m Girona move

Morocco midfielder Azzedine Ounahi has joined Panathinaikos from Girona for €14m, returning to the Greek club on a deal that runs until 30 June 2030.

The 26-year-old central midfielder made the switch on 2 September and becomes a Panathinaikos player again after previously spending the 2024-25 season with the club on loan from Marseille. That spell included a €500,000 loan fee before he returned to the French side at the end of the campaign.

Ounahi moved to Girona from Marseille for €6m on 30 August 2025. He leaves after Girona were relegated from the top division in the 2025-26 season, with the Spanish club competing in LaLiga2 at the start of the current campaign.

The Casablanca-born player had not featured for Girona in LaLiga2 during the opening three possible games of the 2026-27 season before completing his move to Panathinaikos. He is a right-footed midfielder and stands 1.82m tall.

Ounahi arrives in Athens after playing an important role for Morocco at the 2026 World Cup. He appeared in all six of Morocco’s matches, starting 83% of the time, and scored twice as the team progressed through the tournament. He also collected one yellow card.

His international record includes a major honour with Morocco, having been part of the squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025.

The move brings Ounahi back to a club he already knows, following an earlier spell in Greece between September 2024 and June 2025. Before joining Marseille, he had established himself in France after moving from Angers SCO for €8m in January 2023.

Ounahi began his senior career with US Avranches, joining the club from Strasbourg B in a free transfer in 2020. He then moved to Angers for €70,000 in 2021 before earning his move to Marseille.

Panathinaikos have secured the services of the midfielder on a contract lasting until the summer of 2030, with the transfer completed for €14m.
