Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi has acknowledged his team’s shortcomings following a heavy 5-0 loss to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Guehi, who was born in Abidjan, admitted that the Eagles were outplayed from the outset and emphasized the need for the team to learn quickly from the experience.
“It was tough. Newcastle were definitely the better team. They showed their class from minute one, so it’s important that we learn from this and move on,” Guehi told Sky Sports.
The match saw Palace concede five goals, including an own goal by Guehi himself.
Despite having an expected goals tally of 2.02—higher than Newcastle’s 1.39—Palace failed to convert their chances, with Eberechi Eze missing a penalty that could have equalized the score at 1-1.
“It’s got nothing to do with the penalty. That happens, it’s football. Again, it’s important that we learn very quickly because we’ve got another important game,” Guehi added.
The defeat ended Palace’s 13-match scoring streak in the Premier League and left them 12th in the table with 43 points.
Newcastle, on the other hand, climbed to third place with 59 points from 32 matches, strengthening their case for Champions League qualification.
Guehi stressed the importance of taking responsibility and preparing for the upcoming match against Bournemouth.
“Our mindset is that we have no excuses. We all take responsibility. We all have to look ourselves in the mirror and make sure that we’re better next time. It doesn’t matter where you go. Every game in the Premier League is tough, and it’s important that we stand up to those challenges,” he said.
The Eagles will look to bounce back quickly as they face Bournemouth at the weekend, aiming to regain their form and finish the season on a positive note.
