South Africa coach Hugo Broos has explained why he included Orlando Pirates attacker Relebohile Mofokeng in his squad for the World Cup qualifiers despite not being in best shape.
Despite a slight dip in form, Hugo Broos has summoned the 20-year-old for the upcoming games against Lesotho and Benin.
Before dropping in form, Mofokeng had managed 8 goals and provided 12 assists in 36 appearances across competitions for Orlando Pirates.
Despite concerns about his inclusion, the experienced coach remains confident in the ability of the youngster.
“He’s only 20 and still adapting to high expectations. I won’t drop him because of a temporary dip—he needs support to push through,” Broos stated.
The Bafana Bafana will play host to Lesotho Peter Mokaba Stadium on March 21 before traveling to face Benin on March 25, 2025 in the fifth and sixth rounds of the qualifying series.
South Africa are level on seven points with Rwanda in Group C after four matches into the qualifiers. The team will assemble in Johannesburg on March 17 and camp in Polokwane before the home fixture.
