Orlando Pirates uncover Sibongakonke Shongwe as next big defensive prospect
Fresh from their latest domestic triumph, newly crowned Orlando Pirates are already shaping what could be their next winning cycle, with reports emerging that the Soweto giants have secured one of South Africa’s most promising teenage defenders.
The player in focus is 18-year-old Sibongakonke Shongwe of Shining Stars FC, a school-going talent whose rapid rise has drawn internal comparisons with some of the country’s brightest young exports, including Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
Mbokazi, now 20, and fellow defender Olwethu Makhanya, currently based in Major League Soccer, are expected to feature for Bafana Bafana at the 2026 World Cup after earning recognition abroad.
Mbokazi’s recent move to Chicago Fire has only amplified expectations around South Africa’s emerging defensive generation.
Within that context, Pirates believe Shongwe could be their next breakthrough story, having identified him through local amateur league competitions before moving quickly to secure his signature ahead of rival clubs.
“He used to play for Shining Stars. He was supposed to join another team next season. Pirates got him from these LFA games, where there are competitions that they play, and Pirates is also there. So, when they saw him, they signed him right there. He is 18 years old, and he is still at school, and he is still young,” the source said.
The early recruitment reflects a broader shift at Pirates, who have increasingly leaned on youth scouting as part of a long-term strategy to sustain domestic dominance while competing on the continental stage.
Pirates core powers Bafana’s World Cup ambitions
While the club continues to invest in future talent, its present success is also being mirrored at international level, with Pirates heavily represented in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has named a 26-man squad that includes eight Orlando Pirates players, underlining the club’s growing influence on the national team setup.
The selected Pirates contingent features Sipho Chaine, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Kamogelo Sebelebele, Thalente Mbatha, Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, Relebohile Mofokeng and Evidence Makgopa. Their inclusion follows a strong domestic campaign that culminated in the club securing silverware and reaffirming its status as one of South Africa’s leading football institutions.
Among the group, Mofokeng received the most vocal reaction during the squad announcement, highlighting his rising profile at just 21 years of age.
South Africa will round off its preparations with a friendly against Nicaragua on Friday, the final test before heading to the global showpiece, where expectations remain cautiously optimistic but firmly anchored in the team’s youthful energy and club-driven cohesion.
For Pirates, the dual narrative is already clear: a conveyor belt of talent emerging from within and a national team increasingly built around their core.
