Orlando Pirates striker Sebastian Pedersen edging closer to debut

Sebastian Pedersen is moving closer to making his Orlando Pirates debut, although the club has yet to confirm when the Norwegian striker will be ready for competitive action.

Pedersen joined the Buccaneers from Sogndal Fotball but has not played an official match for the club. Orlando Pirates have taken a careful approach to his introduction to Abdeslam Ouaddou’s squad, with the coaching and performance departments focused on ensuring he is properly prepared.

Ouaddou previously said he did not want to rush the 27-year-old into action before he was physically and mentally ready for the demands of playing for Orlando Pirates. The manager also explained that Pedersen was still below the fitness standard required and was working closely with the club’s performance department to reach the necessary level.

The striker has also had to adapt to life outside Norway. His move has involved adjusting to a new country, a new group of team-mates and a different footballing environment, factors the technical team have considered during his integration.

There are now signs that the process is progressing. Pedersen has continued to train with the squad, giving him greater exposure to Ouaddou’s tactical instructions, the movement patterns of his team-mates and the intensity expected at Orlando Pirates.

Although it would be premature to suggest that his first appearance is imminent, optimism is growing that the wait may soon be over. His continued progress could put him in contention for inclusion in a matchday squad, provided Ouaddou believes he has reached the required standard.

Orlando Pirates have so far depended on their available attacking options. Yanela Mbuthuma has been given opportunities while Evidence Makgopa recovers from injury.

Pedersen’s arrival was partly driven by the club’s desire to become more clinical in front of goal. Orlando Pirates created a number of chances last season but did not always convert them, and the Norwegian was identified as a player who could help address that problem.

Ouaddou has already spoken positively about Pedersen’s qualities, especially his finishing. However, the manager has made it clear that those attributes must be introduced at the appropriate time rather than in response to outside pressure.

That stance reflects the club’s decision to prioritise Pedersen’s readiness over supporters’ desire to see their new signing play. The approach remains unchanged, but the striker’s improvement means he may now be approaching the point at which he can be considered for selection.

Anticipation has been heightened by the nickname ‘Baby Haaland’, which sections of the Orlando Pirates support have given Pedersen. The club will hope that, when his opportunity arrives, he can demonstrate why he was recruited as a possible answer to their goalscoring concerns.

The immediate issue for Ouaddou is therefore not whether Pedersen will make his Orlando Pirates debut, but when the manager considers him ready to play.

Orlando Pirates are due to face Sekhukhune United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final. It remains to be seen whether Pedersen has progressed far enough to be involved.
