Orlando Pirates star Oswin Appollis cites sacrifice and hard work for South African league triumph
Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis has reflected emotionally on the club’s Betway Premiership triumph, describing the achievement as the result of collective sacrifice, unity, and relentless hard work across the entire squad and technical team.
Pirates secured the league title with a 2-0 win over Orbit College at a packed Mbombela Stadium, a result that not only sealed the championship but also brought an end to Mamelodi Sundowns’ eight-year dominance of South African football.
For Appollis, who joined the Buccaneers at the start of the season, the moment carried special meaning as he celebrated a breakthrough campaign that also formed part of a wider domestic treble success.
Speaking after the final whistle, the Bafana Bafana international was quick to shift attention away from individual recognition, instead highlighting the unity within the squad and the contribution of everyone involved behind the scenes.
He stressed that the title-winning campaign was not built on one-off performances, but on months of consistency, discipline, and shared belief across the entire club structure.
“It’s all about sacrifice and hard work,” Appollis explained. “The team did it today, but not only today. I want to congratulate the whole squad, even the players who were not on the pitch. They understand what it means to be part of this journey.”
The attacker extended his gratitude beyond the playing group, acknowledging the often-unseen contributions of staff members who supported the team throughout the demanding season.
“Everyone played a role — the staff, the people working in the kitchen, everyone together,” he said. “We did this as one family, and I just want to thank everybody involved.”
Appollis also took time to recognise the club’s leadership for placing their trust in him at the beginning of the campaign, saying the decision to bring him to Mayfair gave him the platform to perform at the highest level in domestic football.
He credited both the board and the technical team for their belief in his abilities and for creating an environment where the squad could thrive under pressure.
“I want to give credit to the club that signed me at the start of the season,” he added. “I’m thankful to the board and the coach for believing in me and my teammates. It’s a collective effort, and we achieved it together.”
Since his arrival, Appollis has settled seamlessly into the Pirates setup under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, emerging as one of the key attacking figures in a side that has enjoyed a highly successful campaign.
Beyond the pitch, Appollis also highlighted the role of the club’s supporters, whose constant pressure and high expectations, he believes, helped drive the team to maintain their standards throughout a demanding title race.
He admitted that while the Pirates faithful can be demanding, their intensity ultimately played a positive role in pushing the squad towards success.
“The fans have been hard on us, but that helped us stay focused and push harder,” he said. “We managed to become champions, so I want to thank all the supporters across South Africa, even those who were not at the stadium today.”
For Appollis, the triumph represents more than just a medal or a title — it is the reward for unity, resilience, and belief within a squad that refused to be overwhelmed by expectation on their way to ending Sundowns’ long-standing dominance.
