South African outfit Orlando Pirates have opened talks with Rhulani Mokwena about potentially replacing Jose Riveiro as the new coach.
The Soweto giants in are currently without a substantive manager following the departure of the Spanish tactician at the end of the campaign.
Riveiro ended his three-year spell with Pirates, joining Egyptian giants Al Ahly ahead of the new campaign.
However, Mokwena, who is the former manager of Moroccan outfit Wydad Casablanca has emerged as a top candidate for the Orlando Pirates job.
According to reports, Orlando Pirates have opened negotiations with the 38-year-old coach, who previously stated he was open to rejoining the Buccaneers.
However, the club needs to act swiftly, as there is also reported interest from Egypt’s Pyramids FC.
Orlando Pirates are eager to seal the deal as quickly as possible to give the coach ample time to prepare for the club’s pre-season tour in Spain.
Background: Mokwena served as assistant to Milutin Sredojević and Josef Zinnbauer at Orlando Pirates from 2017 to 2019 and again in 2019-2020. When the Serbian coach was dismissed in August 2019, Mokwena stepped up as interim head coach of the Buccaneers.
