Orlando Pirates have confirmed that defender Olisa Ndah will not return to the pitch before the end of 2024 after suffering a serious injury. The South African club announced on Wednesday, October 16, that the 26-year-old Nigerian has sustained a fractured tibia, ruling him out for an extended period.

This injury comes as a significant setback for the Buccaneers, who have had a stellar start to the 2024/25 season.

With impressive performances across competitions, the Pirates have already secured their third consecutive South African Cup of Nations title, qualified for the group stage of the CAF Champions League, and notched up three wins in the South African Premiership.

However, the grueling schedule has begun to take a toll, with several players, including Ndah, falling victim to injuries.

His injury occurred during their recent match against Polokwane City, adding to the team’s growing list of absentees.

In an official statement released by the club, Orlando Pirates provided details on Ndah’s condition. “Olisa Ndah missed the South African Cup final due to this injury.

A fracture of the tibia has been diagnosed, and due to its severity and location, treatment options are still being considered.

However, it is certain that Ndah will be out until the end of the year,” the statement read.

The absence of the influential defender is a blow to Orlando Pirates, who rely on Ndah’s experience and presence at the back.

The Nigerian has been a key figure in their recent successes, and his injury presents a challenge for coach Jose Riveiro, as he now looks to reshuffle his defense and maintain the team’s momentum in both domestic and continental competitions.

Despite Ndah’s absence, the Pirates will push forward with their campaign. They are set to face Magesi FC this Saturday in the round of 16 of the Carling Knockout Cup, a match that will be held at Orlando Stadium.

While the team remains focused on progressing in the tournament, the loss of Ndah will undoubtedly be felt as they aim to continue their strong start to the season.

For the Buccaneers, the coming months will be about managing their squad depth and adapting to the growing injury list, all while maintaining the high level of performance that has defined their early season.

Ndah’s return is not expected until 2025, leaving the Pirates to navigate the remainder of the year without one of their defensive pillars.
