Orlando Pirates have confirmed that Angolan international Gilberto will join Petro de Luanda on loan for the remainder of the season. The move marks a return to his hometown club, pending a successful medical examination.
The 23-year-old winger, who signed with the Buccaneers during the off-season from an Angolan club, has struggled to cement his place in the starting lineup.
Despite showcasing his talent at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where he played a key role in Angola’s journey to the quarter-finals, Gilberto has only featured in 12 matches across all competitions for the South African giants.
In an official statement, Orlando Pirates announced the loan agreement: “Orlando Pirates have reached an agreement for the loan of Angolan international Gilberto to Petro de Luanda until the end of the season. His return to his hometown club is subject to a successful medical.”
Limited Opportunities at Pirates
Gilberto’s stint at Orlando Pirates has been marked by limited playing time, with fierce competition in the attacking department.
Head coach José Riveiro has regularly opted for other options, including Monnapule Saleng, Mohau Nkota, and Relebohile Mofokeng, who have been pivotal in the team’s offensive strategies.
The Angolan’s most recent appearance came off the bench during Pirates’ 2-1 victory over Egyptian side Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League last weekend.
However, his reduced involvement in the squad has prompted the loan move, which could provide him with the opportunity to regain his form and confidence back in familiar surroundings.
A Chance for Revival
Returning to Petro de Luanda offers Gilberto a chance to rekindle his career and secure regular playing time.
Petro de Luanda, one of Angola’s top clubs, will benefit from his international experience and versatility on the field.
For Orlando Pirates, the decision to loan out Gilberto allows the club to balance its roster while providing the player with the platform to develop further.
As the season progresses, both clubs will be keenly observing how this move impacts the 23-year-old’s trajectory.
The Pirates will now shift focus to maintaining their strong performances in domestic and continental competitions, with the likes of Saleng and Nkota continuing to lead their attacking charge.
Meanwhile, Gilberto’s return to Petro de Luanda could prove to be a vital step in reigniting his career at the highest level.
