Orlando Pirates complete three-year deal for goalkeeper Dublin Boon

Orlando Pirates have completed the signing of young goalkeeper Dublin Boon from Stellenbosch FC, iDiski Times can confirm.

The 21-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Buccaneers, bringing an end to uncertainty surrounding a proposed transfer involving the player and fellow goalkeeper Faiz Abrahams.

Boon joined Stellenbosch FC from Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand in August last year. During his time with the Cape Winelands-based club, he was primarily used as a back-up goalkeeper for their DStv Diski Challenge side.

His move to Orlando Pirates was initially expected to form part of a wider swap agreement. Under the proposed arrangement, Boon and Abrahams would have moved to the Buccaneers, while Kabelo Dlamini would have transferred in the opposite direction.

That deal ultimately broke down after Dlamini decided against making the switch. Despite the collapse of the larger transaction, Orlando Pirates continued with their interest in Boon and have now finalised his signing.

Sources told iDiski Times that the goalkeeper has put pen to paper on a three-year deal. The agreement confirms Boon’s move to one of South Africa’s leading clubs after only one season with Stellenbosch FC.

The transfer also comes after Orlando Pirates lost Melusi Buthelezi, who joined Sekhukhune United. Buthelezi’s departure has altered the goalkeeping options available to the Buccaneers, although the club still have Siyabonga Dladla and Ethan Visagie in their squad.

Dladla is 25, while Visagie is 21, meaning Boon joins a group that includes two other relatively young goalkeepers. His arrival gives Orlando Pirates another option in the position as the club continues to shape its squad.

Abrahams, who had been linked with the same proposed exchange involving Boon and Dlamini, has since completed a move to Kaizer Chiefs. His transfer was therefore concluded separately from Boon’s eventual switch to Orlando Pirates.

Boon’s signing is the latest development in a transfer sequence that began with discussions over a multi-player deal but ended with the goalkeeper moving independently to the Buccaneers. The three-year contract now secures his future at Orlando Pirates after his spell with Stellenbosch FC.

The completion of the deal means the club have added Boon while retaining Dladla and Visagie, following Buthelezi’s move to Sekhukhune United.
