Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has outlined his team’s ambition to surpass the 70-point mark in their pursuit of the Betway Premiership title, as they look to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the championship.
Pirates strengthened their position in the title race with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, taking their tally to 30 points from 12 matches.
Reflecting on the win, Riveiro insisted his side deserved all three points. “It was a draw without that penalty, but in my opinion, Pirates were better that day,” he said.
With defending champions Sundowns consistently setting the benchmark, Riveiro emphasised the need for his squad to maintain their momentum.
“To be PSL title contenders, you have to aim for more than 70 points,” he stated, acknowledging the high standards required to dethrone Sundowns.
Pirates now turn their focus to a crucial away fixture against Sekhukhune United on Wednesday.
Riveiro stressed the importance of every result, including home victories, in their quest for silverware.
“Even though we played at FNB, it was a home game for us, so these wins are essential,” he added.
However, history is not on their side, as Pirates have not won an away match against Sekhukhune United since April 2022, suffering defeats in their last two visits to the Limpopo-based club.
