Orlando Pirates begin MTN8 title defence against Durban City

Defending champions Orlando Pirates and MTN8 debutants Durban City have confirmed their starting line-ups for the opening clash at the Orlando Amstel Arena, with Pirates beginning their bid for a fifth successive title.

The Sea Robbers have established themselves as the dominant force in the competition in recent seasons. They have won the MTN8 five times in the past six seasons and lifted the trophy 14 times in total, leaving them one victory behind record holders Kaizer Chiefs.

Pirates will start their latest campaign against a Durban City side making its first appearance in the tournament. The match comes after contrasting results for the two clubs in the opening round of the Betway Premiership.

Orlando Pirates began the new season with a 2-0 victory over newly promoted Milford FC. Durban City, meanwhile, were beaten 1-0 by Sekhukhune United.

The fixture also brings Durban City captain Siphamandla Ncanana back to the Orlando Arena. Ncanana drew criticism from several Orlando Pirates supporters and club legends last season after saying ‘Pirates is just a name’. Although he later clarified the comment, it remained a talking point around the meeting between the sides.

The teams met twice during the 2025/26 season. Pirates won the first encounter 2-0 in Durban, before the return fixture at the Orlando Amstel Arena ended in a goalless draw.

Orlando Pirates have named Chaine in goal, with Sibisi, Seema, Sebelebele and Ndaba forming the defensive line. Mbatha and Dansin are included in midfield, while Maswanganyi, Appollis, Moremi and Mbuthuma complete the starting XI.

Pirates’ substitutes are Dladla, Kgositsile, Masilela, Zulu, Mokobodi, Radiopane, Lungu and Hotto.

Durban City will begin with Asare between the posts. Msomi, Mokone, Ncanana and Shandu are selected in defence, with Poggenpoel, Sanger and Nodada operating in midfield. Sifumba, Sirino and Lubumba will lead the attacking line.

Durban City’s bench consists of Dreyer, Gcaba, Maseko, Mthembu, Mofokeng, Makua, Morris, Green and Domingo.

The winners will progress in the MTN8 title race, while Pirates will be aiming to continue their remarkable record in a competition they have won 14 times overall. For Durban City, the opening tie represents both a tournament debut and an opportunity to build on their recent meetings with the reigning champions.
