Orlando Pirates await injury updates on Mbatha and Makgopa
Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa remain sidelined with injuries carried over from last season.
Mbatha missed Pirates’ 1-1 Betway Premiership draw against AmaZulu at Kings Park on Wednesday, while Makgopa has not yet featured in any of the club’s matches this season.
Ouaddou provided the update during his post-match press conference, explaining that both players are currently being assessed by the club’s medical department.
The coach did not disclose the nature of their injuries or provide a timescale for their return. However, he said Pirates were hopeful that neither problem would prove serious.
“Yeah, they are actually between the hands of the medical department,” said Ouaddou.
“I think they had some problems since the last season that bothered them, both of them, underneath.
“I cannot give you more deep information about that, but I know it’s just they have some exam with the doctors to do and I hope it’s not so bad for them.
“But actually, both of them, they are injured.”
The comments mean Pirates will continue to monitor the pair while the medical staff conducts further examinations. Mbatha’s absence was confirmed by his omission from the side that faced AmaZulu, while Makgopa remains without an appearance this season.
Pirates were held to a draw by AmaZulu at Kings Park, and the club will remain in Durban ahead of its next league fixture.
The Sea Robbers are scheduled to face Chippa United on Sunday, 16 August, at Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium. Kick-off is at 15:00.
The match will provide Pirates with another opportunity to assess their available squad, although Ouaddou’s comments suggest that Mbatha and Makgopa’s immediate involvement will depend on the outcome of their medical examinations.
No further details were given about the injuries, and the club has not announced when either player is expected to resume training or return to competitive action.
