Orlando Pirates and Pyramids FC are courting South African tactician Rulani Mokwena for the vacant coaching job.
Both teams are currently without substantive coaches and are currently in the market hunting for a new gaffer heading into the 2025/26 campaign.
Pirates coach Jose Riveiro recently departed the club to join Al Ahly, ending his three-year spell at the club while Croatian gaffer Krunoslav Jurčić, who guided Pyramids to their historic Champions League triumph has left the club.
The Soweto giants have initiated talks to secure the services of Mokwena, who is open for a reunion.
However, the club needs to act swiftly, as there is also a reported interest from Pyramids FC, the reigning CAF Champions League holders.
Orlando Pirates are eager to seal the deal as quickly as possible to give the coach ample time to prepare for the club’s pre-season tour in Spain.
The potential return of the highly-regarded tactician could evoke nostalgia among the Pirates faithful, reminiscent of his previous stint with the Soweto giants.
Mokwena served as assistant to Milutin Sredojević and Josef Zinnbauer at Orlando Pirates from 2017 to 2019 and again in 2019-2020. When the Serbian coach was dismissed in August 2019, Mokwena stepped up as interim head coach of the Buccaneers.
