Olympique de Marseille has stepped back from internal upheaval after owner Frank McCourt rejected the resignation of football director Medhi Benatia, a decision that could shape the immediate futures of attackers Amine Gouiri and Himad Abdelli.
The Ligue 1 club has experienced a turbulent period in recent days, prompting McCourt to intervene directly in an effort to stabilise sporting operations.
Benatia had indicated his intention to step down, but the majority shareholder chose to retain him in his role until at least the end of the season. The move ensures continuity in decision making during a sensitive phase for the Marseille side.
In a statement confirming the arrangement, McCourt said: “Aware of his responsibilities towards the institution, Medhi Benatia has agreed to extend his notice period until June and will oversee all sporting activities.”
The decision reshapes the balance of authority within the club. President Pablo Longoria is now expected to focus primarily on institutional representation, particularly in dealings with French and European governing bodies.
That adjustment effectively places Benatia at the centre of major sporting decisions during the coming months.
Among the most pressing tasks is the search for a successor to Roberto De Zerbi, who was dismissed following a disappointing defeat at the Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain roughly ten days ago.
With Benatia leading the sporting direction, attention has turned to the possibility of Habib Beye stepping into the role, with reports suggesting discussions are advancing.
Any managerial appointment is likely to influence squad planning, and the current developments are viewed internally as positive for Gouiri and Abdelli.
Both players could benefit from the strategic continuity Benatia provides, particularly if the incoming coach aligns with the club’s long term sporting vision.
While Marseille’s recent instability has drawn attention, the ownership’s intervention signals an attempt to restore structure and clarity.
For players and staff, the message is one of short term stability, with Benatia tasked with guiding sporting matters through a decisive stretch of the season.
