OM: Michy Batshuayi Reflects on His First Season at Marseille
Since arriving at Olympique de Marseille in June, Michy Batshuayi has become one of the club’s most promising young talents. The Belgian-Congolese striker, who joined from Standard de Liège, has had a noteworthy debut season, quickly earning the affection of fans, management, and even OM legends.
Speaking to Belgian magazine Sport-Foot, Batshuayi shared his joy and sense of belonging at the club:
“I quickly settled in and I love the club. It suits me well. Among the clubs that were interested, I think I made the right choice by signing for OM, especially since no one expected it.”
He also touched on the support he’s received from Marseille’s passionate fanbase:
“I feel like the fans really like me. Even a legend like Jean-Pierre Papin congratulated me. Then I said to myself: ‘Wow, something is happening.'”
Aware of the scrutiny players face in a city as football-crazed as Marseille, Batshuayi added:
“It’s true that the fans are sometimes hard on some. I think I’m escaping criticism because I’m young and this is my first year at the club.”
Still, youth and promise only go so far in Marseille, a club where expectations are always high. But for now, Batshuayi’s talent and attitude seem to have won over even the most demanding supporters, marking a bright future for the 21-year-old at the Vélodrome.
