Olympique Lyon celebrate Samuel Umtiti with touching farewell before Angers game
Lyon turned their home ground into a stage of gratitude as they celebrated one of their own, Samuel Umtiti, before facing Angers in Ligue 1.
The evening carried a mix of pride and emotion, reminding fans of the bond between the club and a player who grew up in its colours.
The former Barcelona defender announced his retirement on Monday after struggling with injuries in the later years of his career. For many in Lyon, it felt like the closing chapter of a story that began when Umtiti joined the club’s academy at five, long before making his senior debut at 18 in 2012.
Barcelona secured his services in 2016, and he went on to enjoy global success, lifting the World Cup with France in 2018. He later played at Lecce on loan and finished his career with Lille.
At Groupama Stadium, the tribute was simple yet powerful. His jersey was presented, earning a standing ovation, before Umtiti delivered the honorary kick-off. The moment left Lyon supporters reflecting on the journey of a boy who became a champion.
