Fekir Keeps National Team Decision on Hold Amid France-Algeria Tug-of-War
The uncertainty surrounding Nabil Fekir’s international future continues, as the Olympique Lyonnais midfielder remains non-committal about whether he will represent France or Algeria at senior level.
Fekir, 21, has impressed with his performances in Ligue 1, attracting the attention of both national teams. Eligible to play for France, where he was born, and Algeria, his country of heritage, the young midfielder has so far resisted calls to make a definitive choice.
Speaking after Lyon’s 1-1 draw with Nantes on Sunday, Fekir told Le Progrès that he is still reflecting on the decision.
“I read what’s being said in the media,” he said. “I think about it and I’ll wait until the last minute to decide. I don’t want it to become a problem.”
This marks the second time in as many weeks that the Lyon playmaker has been pressed on the matter. Following a recent match against FC Lorient, Fekir hinted at weighing both options carefully, yet stopped short of indicating any preference.
His cautious approach is perhaps understandable. Choosing between Les Bleus and the Fennecs carries not only sporting consequences but also emotional and cultural significance. France offers the allure of high-profile tournaments and global visibility, while Algeria presents an opportunity to represent his family’s roots and contribute to a rising force in African football.
Lyon manager Hubert Fournier has publicly voiced his support for the player’s need for time and space, stating last week that he fully understands Fekir’s position. “It’s a personal and important decision,” Fournier said. “He must take it at his own pace.”
Algeria, under new head coach Christian Gourcuff, recently announced a 24-man squad for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but Fekir was notably absent. Gourcuff has opted to stick with a core of experienced internationals for the double-header against Malawi, while leaving the door open for Fekir should he decide to declare.
France manager Didier Deschamps, meanwhile, has not yet called up Fekir to the senior squad, though speculation remains that he is closely monitoring the midfielder’s progress at Lyon.
As Euro 2016 looms, and with Algeria continuing to build on their 2014 World Cup momentum, the pressure is only likely to intensify. But for now, Nabil Fekir is taking his time — and keeping everyone guessing.
