Khazri Makes History with Landmark Goal in Bordeaux Comeback
Wahbi Khazri etched his name into the history books on Sunday as his goal helped Bordeaux come from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Rennes in Ligue 1 — and marked a significant milestone for the club.
The Tunisian international struck in the 73rd minute, just moments after being brought on as a second-half substitute. Capitalising on a deflected effort from teammate Thomas Touré, Khazri calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to level the scoreline — unaware that his finish would become one for the record books.
That goal was Bordeaux’s 3,400th in Ligue 1, a milestone that places the club among an elite group in French football history. Only Olympique de Marseille and AS Saint-Étienne have scored more in the top flight.
The club acknowledged the achievement in a statement on its official website, placing Khazri alongside iconic names from Bordeaux’s past. “He joins a select circle of greats like Philippe Couécou (1,000th goal), Bernard Lacombe (2,000th), and Johan Micoud (3,000th),” read the statement.
Having signed from SC Bastia during the summer transfer window, Khazri has made an immediate impact at the Matmut Atlantique, quickly becoming a key figure in Willy Sagnol’s side.
The victory over Rennes further cemented Bordeaux’s strong start to the season under Sagnol’s leadership. After initially falling behind, Bordeaux responded with determination. Khazri’s equaliser sparked the comeback before Thomas Touré, who had earlier assisted indirectly, completed the turnaround in stoppage time.
Touré’s rise has also drawn attention, but Sagnol has urged caution regarding the 20-year-old’s rapid emergence, warning that consistency and maturity are crucial at the top level.
As for Khazri, the historic goal adds another highlight to a blossoming Bordeaux career — and offers a timely reminder of the club’s long-standing tradition of attacking football.
