Wydad Casablanca have officially confirmed the departure of head coach Rulani Mokwena following the conclusion of their season.
The South African tactician was initially asked to take a leave of absence due to the team’s underwhelming performances of the club.
However, after the club wrapped up its campaign with a final match against Nahdat Berkane on Sunday, it was announced that Mokwena would no longer continue in his role.
In a show of mutual respect, Mokwena bid farewell to each of his players individually after the match and received a standing ovation from fans, highlighting the amicable nature of the separation.
Both the club and Mokwena had earlier denied any disputes or involvement of sporting bodies in the decision-making process, emphasising that the split was handled internally and professionally.
Mokwena’s contract reportedly included a clause guaranteeing him another season and a significant financial package, especially if he led the team to the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, after the team failed to meet key objectives, the club opted for a change in leadership. Wydad is expected to compensate the 38-year-old coach with a payout of approximately $1 million.
The Moroccan giants are now set to appoint a new head coach, with the decision expected to come after their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Mokwena joined Wydad on a three-year deal in July 2024 after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns.
