Souleymane Diawara Signs for OGC Nice, Eyes Return to Ligue 1 Action
Veteran Senegalese defender Souleymane Diawara has officially joined OGC Nice after successfully passing his medical examination on Tuesday. The 35-year-old, who had been a free agent following his departure from Olympique de Marseille, is eager to make a return to Ligue 1.
Diawara had been training with Arles-Avignon but remained determined to continue competing at the highest level in France’s top flight despite his advancing age. “I believe I can still play at Ligue 1 level,” he said ahead of his signing. Reflecting on his recent past, Diawara revealed that he had hoped to extend his stay at Marseille. “I had discussions with Vincent Labrune and José Anigo about a contract extension, and it was underway, but then they appointed Bielsa. They decided to move forward with younger players. That’s football—it’s the coach who decides.”
The former Bordeaux and Sochaux player will be joining Nice as the fifth club in his professional career, having started at Le Havre and also had a brief, less successful spell in England with Charlton Athletic.
At Nice, Diawara is expected to bring his experience and physical presence to the team’s defensive line, providing strength and leadership for the Aiglons as they prepare for the upcoming season.
