Official: RS Berkane appoint World Cup hero Bubista as new head coach until 2028

Moroccan giants RS Berkane have officially appointed Pedro Leitao Brito, popularly known as Bubista, as their new head coach on a contract running until 2028.

The appointment confirms earlier reports by AfricaSoccer.com that the Botola Pro League side were close to reaching an agreement with the Portuguese tactician to become their new head trainer.

Bubista was unveiled by the club on Tuesday after putting pen to paper on a long-term deal, with RS Berkane hoping his experience and recent achievements can help them compete for domestic and continental honours.

The 2025 CAF Coach of the Year has earned widespread recognition for his historic work with Cape Verde, guiding the small island nation to a remarkable run at their maiden FIFA World Cup appearance last month.

Under Bubista, Cape Verde exceeded expectations at the tournament co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, securing impressive draws against European giants Spain and South American heavyweights Uruguay during the group stage.

The Blue Sharks continued their historic campaign by reaching the Round of 32, where they pushed Argentina into extra time before eventually suffering elimination.

Bubista’s arrival comes at a time when RS Berkane are establishing themselves as one of Africa’s rising forces. The club won the Moroccan league title in 2025 and finished as runners-up this year, maintaining their status as one of the country’s top teams.

On the continental stage, RS Berkane reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League last season and have secured another appearance in Africa’s premier club competition for the upcoming campaign.

The Moroccan side will now look to Bubista’s leadership, tactical expertise and international experience as they aim to challenge for major honours both at home and across Africa.
