OFFICIAL: AVRAM GRANT APPOINTED HEAD COACH OF GHANA
It’s now official: Avram Grant has been named the new head coach of the Ghana national football team. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the long-anticipated appointment on Thursday during a press conference held in Accra.
The Israeli tactician, best known for guiding Chelsea to the 2008 UEFA Champions League final, has signed a three-year contract, set to run until the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Grant replaces Maxwell Konadu, who had been serving as interim coach since the departure of Kwesi Appiah earlier this year.
With just six weeks remaining before the start of AFCON 2015 in Equatorial Guinea, the Black Stars now have a permanent manager to lead them. Grant’s first major challenge will be navigating a tournament where expectations are high but recent performances have underwhelmed.
GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi made the federation’s ambitions clear:
“The objective assigned to Mr. Grant is to do well at the 2015 AFCON and win the 2017 AFCON.”
The 59-year-old coach inherits a squad looking to rebuild its image following the chaos of the 2014 World Cup, marred by bonus disputes and disciplinary issues. Grant’s experience at club and international levels could prove pivotal in reviving Ghanaian football’s fortunes.
