Odion Ighalo hails Sadio Mane for saving African football after AFCON final drama
Former Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo has praised Senegal captain Sadio Mane for his leadership during the dramatic conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, saying the superstar’s actions “saved the reputation of African football.”
Mane reportedly urged his teammates to return to the pitch and continue playing after the Senegalese team initially considered withdrawing, an act Ighalo described as both commendable and crucial.
In an interview with Winwin, Ighalo reflected on multiple aspects of African football, including Nigeria’s performance at AFCON 2025, the controversial final, missed opportunities from Ibrahim Díaz, and recent transfers involving Nigerian internationals.
Regarding AFCON 2025’s final and the referee’s inconsistent decisions, Ighalo noted: “I think Mane saved the reputation of African football when he encouraged his teammates to return and continue playing. His action was commendable.
“I don’t think we can judge the tournament based solely on this incident… I consider this one of the best tournaments I’ve attended, in terms of match quality, organization, stadiums, and all other details.”
Ighalo also discussed Ibrahim Díaz’s missed penalty, calling it unfortunate but part of football: “It was just bad luck… He has to move on and focus on the future.”
The former striker shared his thoughts on the recent moves of fellow Nigerians, including Ademola Lookman’s transfer to Atlético Madrid: “Lookman is a good player, and moving to La Liga is a positive step for his career…
“I believe playing under Diego Simeone will benefit him greatly, as he is a very tactical and intelligent coach.”
Finally, Ighalo reflected on his own AFCON experience, particularly winning the 2019 Golden Boot: “I wouldn’t call it just a moment, because football is ultimately about wins and losses.
“We finished the tournament in third place, and I won the Golden Boot… it was one of the best tournaments I’ve played with the Nigerian national team.”
