Former Nigerian international John Obi Mikel has strongly criticized Jamie Carragher’s recent remarks about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), calling them “ignorant and disrespectful.”
Carragher had suggested that AFCON is not a “major tournament” during a discussion on Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or prospects.
In a passionate response on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel stated, “It’s so disrespectful what he said, and this is coming from someone who never won any major international competition with England.” He emphasized the significance of AFCON, stating, “People in Africa die for the Africa Cup of Nations.” Mikel also criticized Carragher’s lack of major international titles with England, remarking, “You won f*** all with England. F*** all.”
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also responded to Carragher’s comments. They shared AFCON highlights on their social media platforms with the caption “Major Tournament,” underscoring the tournament’s global prestige and value.
