Nyasa Big Bullets consider Ernst Middendorp for head coach role

Malawian football giants Nyasa Big Bullets are reportedly considering experienced German tactician Ernst Middendorp for their vacant head coach position.

According to Pan-Africa Football, Middendorp is among four candidates who have been interviewed by the club as they seek a permanent replacement following recent changes to their technical bench.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach is said to be competing for the role alongside ex-Golden Arrows manager Mark Harrison, Zambian coach Chris Kaunda, and Malawian tactician Gerald Phiri Senior.

Reports indicate that Big Bullets are expected to announce their new head coach shortly after completing the interview process. In the meantime, the team remains under the guidance of caretaker coach Heston Munthali.

The search for a permanent manager comes after the club parted ways with interim coach Gilbert Chirwa last week, ending his six-month stint in charge.

With the Super League of Malawi set to resume later this month, the club’s hierarchy is eager to finalise an appointment to provide stability and direction ahead of the next phase of the campaign.

Middendorp brings a wealth of experience to the table, having worked extensively across Africa during his coaching career. Most recently, he served as technical director at Durban City, the reigning Nedbank Cup champions, before leaving the position in February 2026.

The 66-year-old has also enjoyed coaching spells in several African countries, including Ghana and Ethiopia, and remains one of the continent’s most recognisable football managers.

Should he secure the role, Middendorp would be tasked with restoring momentum at one of Malawi’s most successful clubs as they prepare for the remainder of the domestic season.
