Heartland Queens have been handed a ₦1 million fine by the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) following the assault of match officials during their recent fixture against Remo Stars Ladies at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
The league’s governing body issued the sanction after confirming that club officials and supporters were involved in acts of aggression towards referees during Match 92 of the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership season.
The incident has been described by the NWFL as a grave violation of the core values of respect and fair play that underpin the sport.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, revealed that the punishment was determined after a thorough examination of the referees’ match report, supported by an internal investigation.
The findings, she said, left no doubt about the unacceptable conduct of individuals connected to Heartland Queens.
Referencing Article 26.1 of the league’s regulations, Shabi emphasised the seriousness of such offences: “Any player or official who assaults a referee or any other person during a match, by physical, verbal, intimidation or offensive body language towards the referees is liable to a fine of one million naira and possible ban.”
The NWFL further warned that similar acts could carry harsher consequences, including a potential one-year ban from the venue where the offence took place.
As part of its disciplinary message, the league has called on Heartland Queens to take urgent steps to educate both club staff and supporters on the significance of maintaining discipline and decorum at all times.
The NWFL stressed that the fine serves not only as punishment but also as a deterrent against future misconduct.
“This league will not tolerate any form of violence, abuse, or harassment towards match officials or anyone involved in the game,” Shabi stated. “The integrity of our league depends on mutual respect, and we will continue to uphold that standard.”
This latest incident adds to growing concerns around the treatment of referees within Nigerian football, especially at the grassroots and domestic league levels.
The NWFL reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on violence and misconduct, pledging to apply the full weight of its regulations wherever necessary to protect the integrity of the game.
Heartland Queens have yet to issue an official response to the disciplinary action.
