Nuno Santos: Mamelodi Sundowns determined to restore joy with CAF Champions League triumph
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Nuno Santos has framed their CAF Champions League final first leg against AS FAR as a chance to lift spirits and “make supporters happy again” after a difficult spell, with the decisive encounter scheduled for Sunday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
He said the tie represents an opportunity to reset after recent inconsistency and shift focus to continental success as the team looks to end a demanding season on a positive note in front of fans.
Sundowns come into the tie on the back of a punishing run of seven matches in 21 days, a stretch that ended in a 3-1 defeat to TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership.
The setback has put their domestic title defence in serious jeopardy, with momentum shifting towards rivals Orlando Pirates.
The result underlined concerns over fatigue and inconsistency as the squad battles a congested fixture list across competitions in a season where margins have become increasingly thin overall picture.
Santos acknowledged the demanding schedule has affected performance levels but refused to use it as an excuse for recent results.
“Obviously I don’t want to make any excuses but naturally and physically that’s not the best schedule for any player,” he said.
He added that the congested calendar has made recovery difficult as matches come every few days across competitions, underlining the strain on squad depth and consistency this season across all fronts.
With domestic hopes fading, Sundowns have shifted attention fully to the CAF Champions League final, where they aim to salvage their season on continental stage.
Santos said, “I think we need to move on from that. There is nothing we can do now to change what happened before.”
Sundowns will focus on preparation for AS FAR and improving tactical balance as they seek continental glory and a strong response to recent setbacks in Pretoria this weekend ahead.
Defensive fragility has become a major concern for Sundowns after conceding seven goals in their last two matches across competitions recently exposed in key fixtures.
“Obviously that’s one of the points that we need to improve We don’t blame any individual It is a problem for the whole team,” he said.
The coaching staff are expected to review defensive structure and implement adjustments ahead of the Champions League final first leg.
Despite recent setbacks, Santos remains motivated by his ambition to win continental silverware with Sundowns and contribute to their Champions League success.
“It feels really good that was one of the main purposes for me to come to Sundowns to win the Champions League,” he said. He hopes to help the team secure victory against AS FAR and complete their continental ambition this season.
