Paris Saint-Germain secured a place in the Coupe de France final with a 4-2 victory over Dunkerque, overcoming an early two-goal deficit in a dramatic semi-final.
Despite the scare, PSG managed to regain control and seal the win, maintaining momentum ahead of key fixtures.
“We knew it would be a difficult match”
Dunkerque had already eliminated several Ligue 1 sides on their way to the semi-finals, and PSG were well aware of the threat posed by the underdogs.
However, their sluggish start left them trailing 2-0 early in the game.
“We already knew it was going to be a tough match because they had knocked out many Ligue 1 teams,” said Nuno Mendes after the game. “We didn’t start well, but we did our job, tried to score, and kept pushing. They defended well, but that’s football. We managed to score four goals and, in the end, we got the victory, which is the most important thing.”
A rare two-goal deficit for PSG
Few teams have managed to take a two-goal lead against PSG this season, and Dunkerque’s fast start momentarily stunned the Parisians. However, Mendes insists the squad remained composed throughout.
“This is football. We conceded two goals, but we had to keep playing and stick to our game plan. That’s what we did, and we won.”
The Portuguese full-back also highlighted the importance of manager Luis Enrique’s guidance.
“He tells us every day that if we concede, we must keep playing with patience and stay calm. We knew we had enough time to turn things around, and I think we did that well.”
A lesson ahead of bigger challenges?
With the Champions League knockout rounds approaching, Mendes acknowledged that similar defensive lapses against stronger opposition could be costly.
“Yes, of course, because there are very difficult matches ahead. If we concede two goals like that against a big team, it will be much harder to come back. We need to stay focused from the first minute until the final whistle.”
Dembélé shines again
One of the standout performers was Ousmane Dembélé, who scored twice to help PSG complete their comeback. Mendes was full of praise for his teammate.
“As I’ve said before, Ousmane is an incredible player who brings a lot to the team. We are here to support him, and he helps us as well. Together, we can achieve great things.”
Second-half adjustments key to victory
After a challenging first half, PSG made tactical adjustments that allowed them to dominate after the break.
Mendes credited Luis Enrique for fine-tuning their approach.
“The coach told us to play our game, keep possession in their half, and focus on what we do best. It was difficult to break through their midfield, so we tried to stretch the play and move the ball around. I think we succeeded.”
Eyes on the Champions League
With the Ligue 1 title nearly secured and a domestic cup final on the horizon, PSG’s focus is gradually shifting toward European ambitions.
“We only need a win or a draw to be champions, but we must stay focused in the league because these matches prepare us for the Champions League. Many Ligue 1 teams play at a European level, so we have to take every game seriously.”
Despite PSG’s dominant position, Mendes remains cautious about maintaining form.
“Yes, we are in a good situation, but things can change quickly. Right now, we are performing well, but if we lose a match, doubts can creep in. We have a young squad with quality players, so we need to keep working hard.”
As PSG push for a domestic double, their ultimate goal remains Champions League glory, where they will need to show the same resilience they displayed against Dunkerque—only against far tougher opposition.
