The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Joel Gyempeh, has confirmed that Nsoatreman FC has officially withdrawn from the Ghana Premier League.
This decision follows a violent incident during their Matchday 19 clash with Asante Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park on Sunday, which resulted in the tragic death of Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley, a member of Asante Kotoko’s Supporters’ Communication Team. He was fatally stabbed by unknown assailants.
In an interview with Accra-based MAX FM, Gyempeh revealed that Nsoatreman FC had formally notified the GFA of their withdrawal from the league.
Both clubs have expressed their full commitment to assisting with the ongoing investigation into the incident.
In response, the GFA has placed an indefinite suspension on Nsoatreman FC’s home venue. Additionally, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has been appointed to lead the investigation into the matter.
The match ended with Asante Kotoko securing a 1-0 victory.
Meanwhile, the club has also released an official statement confirming their withdrawal.
PROPOSAL TO WITHDRAW FROM THE 2024/2025 GHANA PREMIER LEAGUE
Accept our warm sporting compliments.
The Club President and the Board of Directors of Nsoatreman Football Club in an emergency meeting held today, 3rd February 2025, have resolved to withdraw from the Ghana Premier League with immediate effect.
This decision has not been arrived at lightly considering the possible consequential effects it is likely to have on the league and other clubs.
However, the club believes that yesterday’s regrettable incident which unfortunately resulted in the loss of life cannot be counterbalanced with any other remedial measure.
This move is a demonstration of our revulsion to the dastardly act perpetrated by hooligans at the Professor KOROMANSAH II stadium in the game between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
Football should be played in an atmosphere of tolerance, love, and sportsmanship.
The Board of Directors believe that allowing the club to continue playing in the league might inadvertently exacerbate the pain of the bereaved family.
We send our deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved family, the GFA and all relevant stakeholders.
Yours faithfully,
