‘Nonsense’ – Kompany hits back at Guardiola criticism ahead of PSG showdown
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has dismissed suggestions that Pep Guardiola tends to overcomplicate high-stakes matches.
The Belgian-Congolese insisting the criticism aimed at his former coach is unfair as the German side gear up for their decisive Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
With Bayern facing a must-win encounter in Munich, Kompany is expected to maintain a steady tactical approach rather than introduce sweeping changes, despite external debate over Guardiola’s legacy in similar situations during his time at the club.
He referenced past European nights, including the 2014 loss to Real Madrid after a bold tactical setup and the 2016 elimination against Atletico Madrid, as moments often used to question Guardiola’s decision-making, but argued context is frequently ignored.
“I played under Pep. It’s not true that he changes everything in big matches. That’s just media nonsense. When you lose, you have to explain yourself. When you win, you’re right,” said Kompany.
Looking ahead to PSG, Kompany indicated that Bayern’s preparation has been rooted in continuity rather than overhaul, stressing the importance of clarity and consistency in execution.
He revealed extensive analysis of the French champions but suggested the focus remains on reinforcing established patterns.
He said he has closely studied PSG’s recent performances, insisting the players need confidence in their existing framework rather than radical alterations ahead of the decisive fixture.
“Imagine if I answered this question by saying I absolutely want to do something completely different – that would be a very silly answer from me.
“It’s about constantly offering the lads small details as solutions. I’ve probably watched 35 PSG matches now. The lads need encouragement to stick with what they’ve been doing all along!”
