Zamalek goalkeeper Mahmoud El Shenawy has admitted the side face a stern challenge against CR Belouizdad in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup semifinals.

The Egyptian giants travel to Algeria for the first leg clash scheduled for Friday night at the iconic Nelson Mandela Stadium, with kickoff set for 9 pm.

The encounter is expected to be fiercely contested, with both sides eyeing a place in the final of Africa’s prestigious club competition.

Speaking during pre-match conference, El Shenawy acknowledged the quality of the Algerian opposition, warning that their journey to the last four is proof of their strength.

“There is no doubt that CR Belouizdad reaching the semi-finals confirms their technical quality and shows how difficult the matches will be, both home and away,” he said.

Despite the challenge, the Zamalek shot-stopper expressed confidence in his team’s goalkeeping unit. With Mohamed Sobhi absent from the traveling squad, responsibility will fall on El Shenawy alongside Mahdi Suleiman and Mohamed Awad.

El Shenawy was quick to dismiss any concerns over the absence, emphasizing the depth and quality within the squad.

“There are no technical differences between the starting goalkeeper and the substitute,” he stated, underlining the unity and readiness within the team.

The experienced goalkeeper also downplayed any pressure associated with playing away in a hostile environment, insisting Zamalek’s players are well accustomed to such high-stakes atmospheres.

“There is no pressure on us playing in their stadium and in front of their fans. Whoever represents Zamalek is used to this atmosphere and capable of achieving a positive result,” he added.

With the return leg scheduled for April 17 at Cairo International Stadium, Zamalek will be aiming to secure a favorable result in Algeria to take back home. El Shenawy made it clear that the squad’s focus extends beyond just qualification—they are driven by a desire to reward their loyal supporters.

“Everyone at Zamalek is focused on making the fans happy this season,” he concluded.

As the semi-final showdown approaches, confidence and determination run high within the Zamalek camp—but they know a tough test awaits on Algerian soil.
