African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, nations are progressively unveiling the rosters that will represent them in the tournament scheduled from January 13 to February 11, 2024, in Ivory Coast. Joining the ranks of countries like Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast, Nigeria has stepped into the spotlight by disclosing its selection this Friday.
Through its official social media channels, the three-time African champion (1980, 1994, 2013) revealed the names of the 25 players chosen by coach Jose Peseiro.
The list features familiar names such as Victor Boniface, Victor Osimhen, and Samuel Chukwueze, with Nantes native Moses Simon also securing a spot.
However, the absence of Niçois Terem Moffi has raised eyebrows, as he did not make the final cut.
The comprehensive squad includes:
Goalkeepers: Stanley Nwabili, Francis Uzoho, Leke Ojo
Defenders: William Troost-Ekong, Bright-Osayi Samuel, Ola Aina, Zaidu Sanusi, Bruno Onyemaechi, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Chidozie Awaziem, Kenneth Omeruo
Midfielders: Wilfried Ndidi, Raphael Onyedika, Joe Aribo, Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi
Forwards: Kelechi Iheanacho, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Ahmed Musa, Sadiq Umar
The exclusion of Terem Moffi, who has been making waves at Nice, adds an element of surprise to Nigeria’s lineup. As the squad takes shape, the eyes of football enthusiasts worldwide remain fixed on the unfolding narrative of AFCON 2023, promising an exciting and fiercely contested tournament in Ivory Coast.
