Super Falcons forward Gift Monday has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in the upcoming edition of the tournament.
The Nigerian team, a dominant force in African women’s football with nine WAFCON titles, lost their crown in the previous edition after being eliminated by Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in the semi-finals.
South Africa’s Banyana Banyana went on to lift the trophy, ending Nigeria’s long-standing dominance.
Determined to Bounce Back
Speaking to Punch Newspaper, Monday highlighted the team’s determination to regain their title, emphasizing the importance of preparation alongside a strong mindset.
“The players are ready because we talk all the time. But it’s not just about mindset, preparation is essential,” she said.
“With the right preparation and everything in place, we will be ready to reclaim our crown,” she added.
Her remarks reflect the Super Falcons’ commitment to reclaiming their status as Africa’s top team after falling short in the last tournament.
Road to WAFCON 2024
The 15th edition of WAFCON is scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to July 26, 2025. Nigeria will be among the favorites heading into the competition, aiming to re-establish their dominance in African women’s football.
With experienced players and rising stars like Monday in the squad, the Super Falcons will look to use their depth and experience to challenge for a record-extending 10th title.
