Philip Otele struck twice as FC Basel cruised to a commanding 5-0 win over Yverdon Sport in the Swiss Super League on Monday, maintaining their place at the summit of the table.
The winger, who hails from Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and is on loan from UAE side Al Wahda, delivered another standout performance as Basel extended their winning run to two games following a recent victory over FC Zurich.
Otele opened the scoring in the 16th minute, capitalising on a clever pass from Brazilian midfielder Metinho to set the tone for a dominant display.
Twelve minutes later, Xherdan Shaqiri added a second to double Basel’s advantage.
Basel’s attacking pressure intensified before the break. Benie Traore, the Ivorian forward, found the net twice in quick succession to hand the home side a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime.
Yverdon, managed by Paolo Tramezzani, struggled to contain Basel’s fluid attack throughout the first 45 minutes.
Otele completed his brace in the 56th minute to make it 5-0, continuing his fine form in front of goal.
The 24-year-old was substituted two minutes later by German midfielder Anton Kade, exiting to applause from the home crowd.
He has now scored eight goals in 14 league appearances this season, emerging as one of Basel’s key attacking players in their title pursuit.
The result strengthens Basel’s position at the top of the league table, while Yverdon remain mid-table with little to play for in the remaining fixtures.
Basel’s attacking quartet of Otele, Shaqiri, Traore, and Metinho proved too much to handle, delivering a complete performance that keeps the momentum firmly in their favour as the season nears its end.
