Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq receives backing from Francisco after difficult outing against Villarreal
Real Sociedad coach Sergio Francisco has offered firm support for Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq following his subdued performance in their 3-2 loss to Villarreal at the Reale Arena.
The match marked Sadiq’s first La Liga start of the season, coming only because Mikel Oyarzabal suffered an untimely injury that left him as the club’s lone senior striker.
The 28-year-old was drafted into the starting lineup as expected, but he struggled to influence proceedings before being replaced in the 56th minute by Ander Barrenetxea, who later found the net.
Statistics highlighted the striker’s difficult evening, with Sofascore rating him the lowest player on the pitch. He had one attempt on goal, managed just 15 touches, and lost all nine duels contested.
Despite those numbers, Francisco urged patience and stressed that Sadiq’s return to full rhythm remains a process.
“Sadiq didn’t have an easy match; we’ve been dealing with a lot of issues, gradually integrating him into the group dynamic; three months ago, starting him was unthinkable,” Francisco said.
“He gave his all, perhaps he didn’t participate much, but it wasn’t an easy situation. Even so, he helped us, he ran a lot, and we need everyone.”
Sadiq is expected to start in their Copa del Rey tie against third-tier Reus, offering him another chance to reassert his value.
