Nigerian football icon Nwankwo Kanu, president of Enyimba FC, made a notable appearance at Zamalek’s final training session on the eve of their Confederation Cup group stage clash.
Kanu warmly greeted the Zamalek delegation, exchanging pleasantries with Cameroonian coach Andre Pique and reminiscing about their encounters in African championships. He also held discussions with Zamalek’s Portuguese head coach, Jose Gomes.
Enyimba midfielder Clinton Gifta set the tone for the upcoming match, expressing confidence in his team’s readiness to secure victory.
Speaking to local media, Gifta emphasised Enyimba’s determination to progress in the tournament.
“We have the quality and are working hard to achieve our goal. We will go far in the tournament—our main goal is to reach the semi-finals at least,” Gifta stated.
Currently, Zamalek leads their group with three points, tied with Al-Masry of Port Said, while Enyimba sits at the bottom of the standings with no points.
Despite recent struggles, Enyimba boasts an illustrious history as one of Africa’s top clubs, having won two CAF Champions League titles (2003, and 2004) and two CAF Super Cups in the same year. Zamalek, meanwhile, occupies second place in the Egyptian Premier League with nine points from four matches, just one point behind league leaders Al-Masry.
Sunday’s clash promises to be a pivotal moment in the group stage, with both teams eyeing progression in the prestigious competition.
