Umar Sadiq has spoken candidly about the difficult chapter he endured at Real Sociedad, reflecting on how injury derailed his momentum and led to a prolonged struggle for form and confidence.
The Nigerian international arrived at Real Sociedad from UD Almería with high hopes and immediate impact.
He marked his debut with a goal against Athletic Bilbao, raising expectations for a promising future in San Sebastián.
But just five days later, those hopes were shattered. A torn cruciate ligament sidelined Sadiq for nearly a year, a blow that transformed his trajectory at the club.
“From the first day at Real Sociedad, I had high expectations,” Sadiq told TVC. “Unfortunately, after five days, I tore my cruciate ligament, and everything changed.”
Following his long rehabilitation, Sadiq returned to the pitch but found himself largely confined to the bench.
The coaching staff, despite his efforts, did not restore him to a prominent role, forcing the forward to accept a limited part in the squad.
“Sometimes you find yourself in situations where you can’t change anything,” he said, alluding to the tactical preferences and decisions made by the manager—choices he respected but which nonetheless hampered his ability to regain rhythm. “I was unable to achieve the necessary continuity,” he admitted.
In search of playing time and a chance to rediscover his sharpness, the 27-year-old moved to Valencia on loan in January.
It was a switch that proved timely. At Mestalla, Sadiq has been a rejuvenated presence in attack, scoring four goals in 11 La Liga appearances and contributing meaningfully to the team’s forward play.
“As a football player, continuity is essential,” Sadiq stressed. “Since joining Valencia, I have been playing regularly and regaining my confidence. It allows for more calm and time to showcase my talent.”
While the future remains uncertain—whether his revival at Valencia earns him another chance at Real Sociedad or a permanent move elsewhere—Sadiq’s resilience in the face of adversity stands out.
