Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey named Fulham’s Player of the Season

Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey named Fulham’s Player of the Season

Calvin Bassey has been voted Fulham’s Player of the Season, capping off an impressive campaign in which the Nigerian international proved to be a key figure in the London club’s backline.

The 24-year-old defender featured in all but three of Fulham’s Premier League matches during the 2023/24 season, cementing his role as a defensive mainstay for Marco Silva’s side.

His consistent performances and commanding presence at the heart of defence earned him 39.6% of the fan vote, placing him well ahead of his closest competitors.

Bassey’s international teammate, Alex Iwobi, finished second with 21.5% of the vote, followed by American left-back Antonee Robinson at 19.9%. Goalkeeper Bernd Leno and midfielder Saša Lukić rounded out the top five with 10.9% and 8.1% respectively.

Speaking to Fulham’s official website following the announcement, Bassey expressed gratitude to the supporters and those who contributed to his successful season.

“Thank you guys for voting me Player of the Season,” he said. “I want to thank God—without Him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

A big thank you to all my teammates, even the ones no longer at the club, who helped me throughout.”

He also paid tribute to the club’s coaching staff and management. “Thanks to the coaching staff and the manager for the trust and confidence they’ve shown in me.

I hope we can achieve great things together next season. Thank you for your support, everyone.”

Bassey’s award follows a season in which Fulham impressed with disciplined defensive displays and strong home form.

The Nigerian centre-back played a pivotal role in keeping opposition attacks at bay, often demonstrating maturity, composure, and leadership well beyond his years.

His ability to read the game, intercept dangerous passes, and dominate aerial duels earned him widespread praise from fans and pundits alike.

For a player who only joined Fulham from Ajax the previous summer, Bassey’s rapid adaptation to the Premier League has been a testament to both his quality and his work ethic.

The recognition as Fulham’s standout performer is a significant milestone in Bassey’s career, underlining his growing influence not only at club level but also on the international stage with Nigeria.

Having already featured prominently for the Super Eagles, his stock continues to rise as one of Africa’s most promising defenders.

With Fulham aiming to build on the momentum of the past season, Bassey’s leadership and consistency at the back are likely to remain crucial to the club’s ambitions going forward.

Fans will now be hoping that his performances can inspire further success as the Cottagers look ahead to the 2024/25 campaign.

As he stood before the camera to receive his award, the video released by the club captured a player both humble and motivated—qualities that have endeared him to the Fulham faithful and earned him the well-deserved title of Player of the Season.
